This article that answers some questions we regularly get asked about Botox, Dermal Fillers & Lip Fillers at Tay MediSpa, Perth.
As we naturally age, over-active muscles in the face cause the skin to lose elasticity, leading to the appearance of wrinkles and lines. There are two types of wrinkles; dynamic and static. Dynamic wrinkles appear when you are making a facial expression and static wrinkles are visible even at rest. Botulinum anti-wrinkle treatments such as Botox ® will soften the appearance of these wrinkles to give a more youthful appearance.
Botox received a cosmetic license in 2002 and its use as a quick, non-surgical and discrete treatment make it popular with millions of men and women worldwide. It is used to soften lines around the eyes, brows and forehead by relaxing the muscles whilst preserving facial expression. The effects will develop gradually over two weeks and last for three to six months.
Wrinkle-reducing injections can be used to treat common problem areas such as frown lines (glabellar lines), surprise lines (forehead lines) and crow’s feet (periorbital lines). Maintenance treatments can be repeated when required and will help prevent the development of future wrinkles.
Question What is botox?
Botulinum toxin, is a non-invasive injectable muscle relaxing treatment that is primarily used to soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face. Botox ® is actually the trademarked name of the drug produced by manufacturer Allergan, but it has become the term most people use for the injections generally. It works by relaxing the muscles that cause the skin to crease and develop lines or wrinkles.
How does Botox work?
Botox works by blocking the signal from the nerve to the muscle, which means the nerve cannot tell the muscle to move. As an anti-ageing treatment, botox is injected into specific facial muscles that are used for certain expressions, such as frowning or squinting. The effects lasts 3-6 months, after which your facial expressions will return to normal. Lines and wrinkles on the forehead (frown lines), crows’ feet or laughter lines around the eyes and the creases between the eyebrows (known as glabellar lines) are the main concerns that botox is used to treat.
Although it is most commonly used to treat wrinkles, botox can also be used to stop you sweating, to alleviate migraines and tension headaches, and to correct a square jaw or “gummy” smile. It has also been used to treat urinary incontinence and muscular spasms in some patients.
Is Botox Safe?
Over the last 15 years, a huge amount of clinical and practical evidence has shown the effectiveness and safety of botulinum toxin. Injecting botox® is a quick and simple procedure, and most patients find that botox injections cause little discomfort as the needles are very fine and only a small amount of liquid is injected.
Botox side effects?
Side effects of botox® injections are rare, but can include some temporary bleeding, bruising or mild swelling at the injection site. The worst side effects associated with botox®, such as the overly frozen or stunned look, are usually down to too much being injected or the wrong muscle being injected.
Less than 1% of people who have had botox have developed a drooping eyelid (known as partial ptosis) after treatment. This is only temporary and will improve over a few weeks. Some people have also developed a droopy brow because of muscles in their forehead being over relaxed. Again, this is a temporary side effect but if you do experience these after your treatment, you should contact your practitioner.
How long does Botox last?
Botox® usually lasts 3-6 months, after which your muscle movement in the treated area will return to normal.
Dermal Fillers & Lip Filler
Over time, loss of volume and reduced elasticity in the skin leads to static wrinkles and permanent lines. Commonly these lines are found around the nose and mouth, where they are known as nasolabial and marionette lines. Dermal plumping treatments are natural, safe and ideal for reducing the appearance of these lines. The results are immediate and can be tailored for a subtle or more dramatic look.
At Tay Medispa we use Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers. HA is a natural substance found in the human body, and it is this that gives youthful skin a softer appearance. Products such as Restylane ® closely resemble our own HA which makes them safe, non-allergic and superior to synthetic or collagen fillers.
Am I a Candidate for Dermal Fillers or Lip Filler?
Most people who opt for dermal fillers are over 35 and are experiencing the effects of premature aging, however younger people in their 20s often have fillers to give them a fuller pout or correct minor deformities in the nose as an alternative to a nose job.
If you have any of the following concerns, you could be a candidate for dermal fillers:
- Deep nose to mouth lines (nasolabial folds)
- Smoker’s lines around the mouth
- Loss of volume in the cheeks
- Thin or un-shapely lips
Fillers are generally very safe nowadays however pregnant women or women who are breast feeding are not advised to have treatment. People with acne should get the condition address first as skin conditions like this can increase the risk of infection following injections with dermal fillers.
Some fillers, such as those made from bovine collagen, can cause an allergic reaction and involve a skin test prior to treatment. Make sure you check what material the filler you are having is made from in case you are allergic to any of the components. Certain conditions such as auto-immune disease and rheumatoid arthritis can also make you an unsuitable candidate for this type of filler.
