How to remove Shellac at home

remove shellac

We know that some of our clients may have existing Shellac manicures and may be worried about how to remove their own Shellac safely whilst we are closed. I am a Skin Therapist and Nail Technician with Tay MediSpa and in this blog, I will explain how to remove Shellac safely at home. Let’s keep your nails in tip-top condition in time for your next trip to see us for a manicure!

What do I need?

In order to safely remove Shellac, you will need the following items:

  • Acetone
  • Cotton Pads
  • Tin Foil
  • A Nail File
  • Cuticle Pusher Tool
  • Nail Oil

If you do not have any of these items, you will be able to order them online or pick them up during your next essential shopping trip to the supermarket. If you’re looking for professional Nail Oil, we recommend CND Solar Oil available in-clinic. Just pop us an email to info@taymedispa.co.uk and we will pop some in the post for you.

How to remove Shellac

Step 1 – Buff your nails

Begin by giving your nails a light buff-over with your nail file to remove the shine from your gel. This breaks down the topcoat and allows the acetone to penetrate through the layers of the Shellac more easily.

Step 2 – Prep time

Get a cotton pad and cut it in half, and then in half again, into quarters. Cut your tin foil into strips big enough to wrap comfortably around your nails to seal everything in place. Once you have done this, you’re ready to get started with the Shellac removal.

Step 3 – Soak those nails!

Soak your cotton pad quarter generously in acetone. Place the cotton pad onto your nail and then fold your foil strip around your nail to hold the cotton pad tightly in place, just as we would do for your in-clinic. Repeat this step for the rest of your nails, and then wait for 10 minutes to allow the acetone to work its magic.

Step 4 – Remove the foils

Now it’s time to remove the foils one-by-one. Use your cuticle pusher to gently push off any remaining shellac from your nails. If the polish isn’t sliding easily from your nails, you need to leave the acetone a bit longer on your nail, so wrap your finger back up and wait for a few more minutes.

Step 5 – Nourish your nails!

Finish by applying your favourite cuticle and nail oil to rehydrate your nails. We recommend CND Solar Oil, available online or pop us an email to info@taymedispa.co.uk to purchase with us.

A note from Megan

And that’s all it takes! I hope this has helped anyone who is worried about removing their Shellac themselves during the Covid-19 lockdown. Please let us know if there is anything else we can help with or any questions we could answer. We look forward to seeing you all back in the clinic soon. I can’t wait to give you all fresh, new sets of Shellac once we reopen!
